RESUMO

Experiencing the homicide of a loved one has a substantial impact on the mental health of family members and friends who must survive their loved one's tragic death. This systematic review aims to synthesize the current findings on post-homicide factors and identify the factors most frequently related to the mental health of homicidally bereaved individuals (HBI). Four databases were searched (PsycINFO, SCOPUS, Sociological Abstract, PubMed). The selection of studies was based on a peer review process conducted by two independent researchers to ensure interrater reliability. The articles were screened to ensure the presence of homicidally bereaved adults, resulting in a total of 35 eligible papers to be considered in the current review. Factors were organized into categories, with the criminal justice system-related factors (n = 18), social factors (n = 17), and coping factors (n = 13) being the most prevalent. This review identifies clinical avenues for preventing distress and fostering the well-being of HBI.

Exopolysaccharides (EPS) from the microalgae Porphyridium cruentum, Chrysotila dentata, Pavlova sp., Diacronema sp., Glossomastix sp., Phaeodactylum tricornutum, and Synechococcus sp. were isolated and depolymerized. First, EPS were submitted to a high pressure pre-treatment step, followed by a solid acid-catalyzed hydrolysis step carried out in a batch or recycle fixed-bed reactor, using a strong acidic cation-exchange resin. Twenty-eight different EPS forms were thus obtained. After characterization of their main structural features (weight- and number-averaged molecular weight, polydispersity index, sulfate and uronic acid contents), we investigated the structure-function relationship of their pro-collagen activity. We found that native microalgae EPS were able to inhibit until 27% of human matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) activity while the depolymerized forms were able to enhance collagen production by two different human fibroblast lines, used as cell models due to their major role in dermal collagen biosynthesis. The most active EPS forms, obtained by depolymerization in the recycle fixed-bed reactor of D. ennorea and Glossomastix sp. EPS, led to 390% increase in collagen production. Finally, principal component (PCA) and Pearson analyses indicated that MMP-1 inhibition was strongly correlated to the sulfate group content of EPS whereas collagen production by fibroblasts was mostly related to their proportion of low molecular weight polysaccharides (<10 kDa). Uronic acid content of EPS was also shown essential but only if the size of EPS was reduced in the first place. Altogether, these results gave new insights of the dermo-cosmetic potential of microalgae EPS as well as the key parameters of their activity.


Six new and original EPS from microalgae were isolated.Microalgae EPS were depolymerized by high pressure/solid acid-catalyzed hydrolysis.Native EPS inhibited human matrix metalloproteinase-1.Depolymerized EPS highly stimulated collagen production by human dermal fibroblasts.Structure­function studies revealed that sulfate groups and MW of EPS were crucial.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is one of the most common adverse effects of antineoplastic agents, ranging in prevalence from 19% to over 85%. Clinically, CIPN is a predominantly sensory neuropathy that may be accompanied by motor and autonomic changes of varying intensity and duration. The high prevalence of CIPN among cancer patients makes it a major problem for both patients and survivors, as well as for their health care providers, especially because there is currently no single effective method of preventing CIPN; moreover, the options for treating this syndrome are very limited. Phycocyanin, a biliprotein pigment and an important constituent of the blue-green algae Spirulina platensis, has been reported to possess significant antioxidant and radical-scavenging properties, offering protection against oxidative stress, which is one of the hypothetic mechanisms, between others, of CIPN occurrence. METHODS: Our hypothesis is that phycocyanin may give protection against oxaliplatin-induced neuropathy in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. Our trial will be a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study with 110 randomized patients suffering from metastatic gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma including esogastric, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers. Patients are being followed up in the gastroenterology or oncology departments of seven French hospitals. DISCUSSION: Due to the neuropathy, patients need to avoid injury by paying careful attention to home safety; patients' physicians often prescribe over-the-counter pain medications. If validated, our hypothesis should help to limit neurotoxicity without the need to discontinue chemotherapy. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05025826. First published on August 27, 2021.

This work aims at studying the techno-economic feasibility to produce an extract, at a small industrial-production scale, from a Tisochrysis lutea's paste, in view of cosmetic applications. The paste was first thawed, diluted and centrifuged to get a crude water extract. Then, two successive stages of membrane filtration were carried out: the first one to essentially remove/retain the particles (cellular debris) by microfiltration and the second one to concentrate (ultrafiltration) the soluble compounds of the permeate from the previous step. The robustness of the processing chain has been demonstrated following the production of three similar extracts with more than 30 L input material each. Around 54% of the final extract was composed of proteins and carbohydrates. The final ingredient was assessed for genomic activity and showed multiple positive responses. Finally, an economic analysis was performed, which demonstrated that the major cost is linked to centrifugation step. The total manpower represents the highest cost of the OPEX categories.

Lipid peroxidation is associated with the development of some pathologies, such as cardiovascular diseases. Reduction in oxidative stress by antioxidants, such as Arthrospira (formely Spirulina), helps improving this redox imbalance. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of the Arthrospira liquid extract "Spirulysat®" on oxidative markers-in particular, oxidized LDL (oxLDL)/total LDL cholesterol-and isoprostanes and to investigate its impact on lipid and glucose metabolism in the metabolic syndrome subject. A controlled, randomised, double-blind design was conducted in 40 subjects aged 18 to 65 years with metabolic syndrome after a daily intake of Spirulysat® or placebo for twelve weeks. Blood and urinary samples were collected at three visits (V1, V2, V3) in the two groups for parameters determination. Although the Spirulysat® group showed a decrease at all visits of the oxLDL/total cholesterol ratio, there was no significant difference compared to the placebo (p = 0.36). The urinary isoprostanes concentration in the Spirulysat® group was reduced (p = 0.014) at V3. Plasma triglycerides decreased at V3 (p = 0.003) and HDL-cholesterol increased (p = 0.031) at all visits with Spirulysat®. In conclusion, Spirulysat® did not change the oxidized LDL (oxLDL)/LDL ratio but decreased the urinary isoprostanes, plasma triglycerides and increased HDL cholesterol, suggesting a beneficial effect on metabolic syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Gestational hypercholesterolemia concomitantly with a highly oxidative environment is associated with higher atherosclerosis in human and animal offspring. This work aimed to determine whether perinatal administration of a C-phycocyanin concentrate, a powerful antioxidant, can protect against atherosclerosis development in genetically hypercholesterolemic mice in adult life. Approach and Results: C-Phycocyanin was administered during gestation solely or gestation and lactation to apolipoprotein E-deficient mice. Male and female offspring were studied until 25 weeks old. Progenies born to supplemented mothers displayed significantly less atherosclerotic root lesions than control group in all groups excepted in male supplemented during gestation and lactation. Female born to supplemented mothers had a greater gallbladder total bile acid pool, lower secondary hydrophobic bile acid levels such as lithocholic acid, associated with less plasma trimethylamine N-oxide at 16 weeks old compared with control mice. Regarding male born to C-Phycocyanin administrated mothers, they expressed a higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, more soluble bile acids such as ß-muricholic acids, and a decreased plasma trimethylamine at 16 weeks old. Liver reduced-to-oxidized glutathione ratio were increased and liver gene expression of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase were significantly decreased in male born to gestational supplemented mothers. No difference in the composition of cecal microbiota was found between groups, regardless of sex. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest a protective effect of perinatal antioxidant administration on atherosclerosis development in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice involving sex-specific mechanisms.

The aim of this work was to develop a method for the clean-up of a mycotoxin, i.e. Ochratoxin A (OTA), from cereal extracts employing a new molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) as selective sorbent for solid-phase extraction (SPE) and to compare with an immunoaffinity column. A first series of experiments was carried out in pure solvents to estimate the potential of the imprinted sorbent in terms of selectivity studying the retention of OTA on the MIP and on a non-imprinted polymer using conventional crushed monolith. The selectivity of the MIP was also checked by its application to wheat extracts. Then, after this feasibility study, two different formats of MIP: crushed monolith and micro-beads were evaluated and compared. Therefore an optimization procedure was applied to the selective extraction from wheat using the MIP beads. The whole procedure was validated by applying it to wheat extract spiked by OTA at different concentration levels and then to a certified contaminated wheat sample. Recoveries close to 100% were obtained. The high selectivity brought by the MIP was compared to the selectivity by an immunoaffinity cartridge for the clean-up of the same wheat sample. The study of capacity of both showed a significant higher capacity of the MIP.
